Functional Nursing and Holistic Nursing Certification: A New Opportunity for Nurses

Over the past year, I’ve spent a lot of time talking with nursing professionals about the future of functional nursing certification. As this field grows, many nurses have asked an important question:
How do we formally validate this work as part of professional nursing practice?
In nursing, certification has always played an important role in recognizing advanced knowledge and clinical expertise. Whether it’s critical care nursing, oncology nursing, or many other specialties, board certification allows nurses to demonstrate their commitment to excellence and specialized training in their field.

For a long time, I’ve believed that functional nursing deserves that same level of professional recognition.
While we continue working toward the development of a formal functional nursing certification in the future, I’m excited to share an important milestone for our community- nurses and nurse practitioners who complete the Functional Nursing Program™ through the Institute for Functional Nursing are eligible to sit for the Holistic Nursing Board Certification, provided they meet all other eligibility requirements.
I took this exam myself a few years ago, and I feel it aligns very well with functional nursing education and clinical practice.
This was a meaningful insight for us as we built the program, and it reflects something we’ve believed from the beginning.
Functional nursing and holistic nursing are deeply aligned.
Functional Nursing and Holistic Nursing: Two Expressions of the Same Philosophy
At the Institute for Functional Nursing, we believe that functional nursing and holistic nursing are essentially synonymous in their core philosophy.
Both approaches emphasize:
Whole-person care
Root-cause exploration
Patient partnership and education
Lifestyle and environmental influences on health
The integration of mind, body, and spirit in healing
Functional medicine gives us powerful clinical frameworks rooted in biochemistry and systems biology. Holistic nursing provides a nursing-centered framework that honors the full human experience of health and healing.
When these two perspectives come together, the result is a powerful model of nursing practice that allows us to address both the science and the humanity of healing.
As we developed the Functional Nursing Programâ„¢, we intentionally built strong connections to holistic nursing principles because we believe they are foundational to the future of nursing.
Why Holistic Nursing Board Certification Matters
Board certification provides nurses with an important way to validate their expertise and commitment to specialized practice.
Holistic nursing certification recognizes nurses who have developed advanced knowledge and skills in areas such as:
Whole-person assessment
Integrative and holistic care approaches
Therapeutic presence and patient partnership
Health promotion and lifestyle-based healing
Mind-body-spirit connections in health
For RNs and NPs practicing functional nursing and other integrative approaches, this certification can help demonstrate professional credibility while reinforcing the nursing foundation of the work we do.
Just as nurses in other specialties pursue certification to strengthen their practice, holistic nursing certification offers a meaningful pathway for nurses who are committed to whole-person care.
How the Functional Nursing Programâ„¢ Supports Certification
When we designed the Functional Nursing Program™, our goal was to build an educational experience specifically for registered nurses and nurse practitioners who want to integrate functional medicine into their practice.
The program includes:
Comprehensive functional nursing education designed to address the Institute for Functional Medicine's published clinical competencies
Biochemistry and systems-based clinical thinking
Nutrition science and therapeutic nutrition strategies
Functional assessment and root-cause exploration
Holistic nursing principles and whole-person care
Nurse coaching skills to support patient behavior change
These components reflect the real-world practice of functional nursing and align closely with the philosophy of holistic nursing.
Because of this alignment, nurses who complete the program may find that it supports their eligibility to pursue Holistic Nursing Board Certification, assuming they meet the additional criteria required by the certification body.
Coaching Education and Continuing Certification
Another important component of our program is nurse coaching education.
Coaching skills are essential in functional nursing because they help us partner with patients to identify meaningful goals, support sustainable behavior change, and empower patients to take an active role in their health.

While the Functional Nursing Program™ does not provide the supervising hours required to initially obtain the Nurse Coach Board Certification, the nursing contact hours earned through our program may be used toward renewal requirements for nurses who already hold that certification.
We believe these coaching skills are essential for the future of nursing and intentionally incorporate them into the educational experience including over 70 case studies!
An Important Note About Certification Eligibility
Every certification pathway has specific eligibility requirements related to licensure, education, and professional experience.
For this reason, it’s essential that nurses review the full eligibility criteria before pursuing certification.
This will help ensure that you meet all necessary qualifications before applying to sit for the exam.
Moving the Profession Forward
One of the most exciting parts of building the Institute for Functional Nursing has been witnessing the momentum growing within our profession.
More and more nurses are stepping forward to integrate functional medicine, holistic care, and patient-centered healing into their practice.
Certification is one important step in strengthening that movement. It helps validate the depth of knowledge required for this work and reinforces the leadership role nurses can play in transforming healthcare.
At IFN, we remain deeply committed to supporting nurses who want to expand their clinical knowledge, practice with greater alignment, and bring root-cause healing into their work with patients.
The future of healthcare will not be built by one discipline alone.
It will be shaped by nurses who are willing to lead with knowledge, compassion, and a commitment to whole-person healing.
